The one-sentence version
Compatibility in Vedic astrology isn't a single score. It's a multi-layered reading of two charts — how they line up, where they support each other, where they chafe.
The duet analogy
Two musicians can each be brilliant alone but not work as a duet. Or two average musicians can combine into something exceptional. What makes a duet isn't the individual skill — it's the fit.
Compatibility readings look at fit. Where your chart is loud and theirs is quiet, do those complement or collide? Where you're sensitive, are they steady? Where you're moving, are they paced to keep up?
The layers of compatibility reading
1. Guna Milan (36-point matching)
The traditional Indian system. Eight factors (Kutas), each scored, summed to a maximum of 36.
- Varna (1 pt) — work / temperament compatibility.
- Vashya (2 pts) — mutual attraction, magnetism.
- Tara (3 pts) — star compatibility, fortune.
- Yoni (4 pts) — sexual and biological affinity.
- Graha Maitri (5 pts) — friendship between the ruling planets of both Moons.
- Gana (6 pts) — temperament alignment (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa).
- Bhakoot (7 pts) — sign-based marital harmony, prosperity.
- Nadi (8 pts) — constitutional and progeny compatibility.
18+ is acceptable, 24+ is good, 28+ is excellent. But remember: this is just the Moon's nakshatra in each chart, not the full picture.
2. The 7th house cross-check
The 7th house governs partnership. In each chart, we look at:
- The 7th lord — its dignity, its house placement.
- Planets aspecting the 7th house.
- Venus (for men) and Jupiter (for women) — the classical significators.
3. Navamsa (D9) overlay
The D9 Navamsa chart is the marriage chart. We overlay both partners' Navamsas to see how their marriage-signature planets interact.
4. Mars (Mangal Dosha) check
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th in either chart triggers Mangal Dosha — a traditional friction indicator. Cancellations apply (matched Mangal, Mars in own sign, Jupiter aspect).
5. Synastry — chart overlay
Where does their 7th lord sit in your chart? Where does your Venus sit in theirs? This synastry layer is how Western astrology does it too — and it translates straight into Vedic terms.
6. Dasha timing
If you're both in harmonious dashas, the relationship flows. If one of you is in a difficult Saturn or Rahu phase, the same chart-fit can feel strained. Compatibility is both static (the charts) and dynamic (the current timing).
Beyond marriage
Same techniques, different emphasis:
- Parent–child. 4th and 5th houses weighted; Moon and Jupiter highlighted.
- Business partners. 7th and 11th houses; Mars, Mercury, Saturn positions.
- Siblings and close friends. 3rd and 11th houses.
- Mentor–student. 5th and 9th houses; Jupiter positions.
What the app does
- Full 36-point Guna Milan with a per-Kuta breakdown.
- 7th house, Venus, Jupiter comparison across both charts.
- Navamsa (D9) overlay for marriage reading.
- Mangal Dosha detection + cancellations.
- Full synastry grid — where each of your planets lands in the other chart.
- Dasha timing correlation — when the relationship has smooth stretches and when it hits friction.
- Supports family and platonic compatibility too, not just romantic.
Classical source
Guna Milan and the Kuta system come from Muhurta Chintamani and the regional matchmaking traditions. BPHS ch. 29 (the 7th house), Phaladeepika ch. 15 (marriage), and the Jaimini Sutras (Darakaraka) provide the wider-chart compatibility framework. Mangal Dosha is in Jataka Parijata and Saravali.
